Description
Chikungunya virus belongs to the family Togaviridae, which includes enveloped, icosahedral, single stranded RNA (+) viruses with a diameter of approximately 70 nm. Chikungunya is an acute febrile illness with sudden onset of fever and joint pains, particularly affecting the hands, wrists, ankles and feet. The virus is transmitted from human to human by the bites of infected female mosquitoes.
