Hepatitis E

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is a non-enveloped, positive-sense, single-stranded RNA virus from the family Hepeviridae, genus Orthohepevirus.

Clinical characteristics are those of acute hepatitis. The disease presents low mortality but it can become extremely severe in pregnant women, immunocompromised patients and in patients with chronic liver disease, where it frequently causes fulminant hepatic failure with high mortality rates or it can trigger severe hepatic decompensation.
